Born in Fukushima Prefecture, Ariga Toragoro left home during his mid-teens to apprentice under the Kyoto commercial photographer Koizumi Michitaro. In 1908 he went to Berlin to study under Zander (photographer for the Imperial Court of Germany). He returned to Japan in 1914 and in the following year he opened a studio in Tokyo's Shiba district, which is still in operation.
