Title, date and annotations "Cliche disponible montage solarise" in pencil and numbered 6 in ink on the verso. This print was made by Ubac in 1937 for a Paris exhibition. Also pencil note: "Corcoran Exposition" and number 6016. The image was also exhibited at the Hirschl & Adler Modern in 1989. See: Departures: Photography 1924-1989, p.34, pl.15; L'Amour fou, p.71-73; In the Mind's Eye, Dada and Surrealism, p.49, fig.5; Photography: A Facet of Modernism, p.94; Malerei Und Photographie im Dialog, pl.701; The New Vision: Photography between the Wars, p.97; Lemagny and Rouille, A History of Photography, p.236; Das Aktfoto, p.113 and Anxious Visions, p.25, pl.12 and p.162, pl.204 for other studies from the series. Prints, especially large ones from this series, by Ubac are extremely scarce. This print had remained in the Ubac estate until auctioned. Provenance: Ubac estate; Christie's NYC Auction; Vision Gallery (1994). Framed. A similar one, but slightly smaller, sold in the Breton sale in Paris in 2003 for a hammer price of 95,000 euro, plus the premium. I think this one the equal to or better than that one. Christian Bouqueret, who produced the Catalogue Raisonne for Ubac, once told me that this image was the very best in the estate. Shipping and insurance costs will be added to the price and must be paid for by the buyer. Pennsylvania buyers must pay appropriate local sales tax. International clients are responsible for their VAT and other custom's oriented charges.
