DESCRIPTION:

Simply a magical and majestic photo impressionistic image. Probably a bridge in Pittsburgh. With Sleeth's label with title ("No. 1, The Age of Steel) on the verso of the mount. The image was published in "Die Photographische Kunst im Jahre 1909, which was Germany's most important annual photography publication of that period. R. L. Sleeth was reportedly a friend of Edward Steichen. He was a Pittsburgh lawyer, steel magnate and avid and talented amateur photographer. He was a member of the Pen, Pencil and Camera Club of Pittsburgh, the Camera Club of Pittsburgh, Academy of Science and Art, Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh Camera Club. Sleeth's work was published in the American Annual of Photography in 1910. He seemed to be active from about 1900-1920. His impressionist photographs won many prizes in the U.S. and abroad. He moved from Wilkinsburg, PA (a suburb of Pittsburgh), and then to Decatur, IL. His work is in the collections of the Carnegie Library and the Illinois State Historical Library.
